We’re working with…Chrissy Lau

One of the great things about working for Smiggle is you are exposed to creativity in all shapes and forms. Our creative director Tony was surfing the net one day and stumbled across an amazing blog by Chrissy Lau. We could instantly tell she had the Smiggle spirit!

Chrissy has worked with Smiggle on several projects now and we though it would be great to pick her brain and find out where her inspiration comes from.

What do you love most about your job?

I’ve been drawing since I could remember, so to be paid to do something I love is a real honour.

I really enjoy the process of translating words from a client into a visual piece of work. Seeing the final piece on a website, in a magazine or on a t-shirt is really rewarding.

How did you come to work for Smiggle?

I was originally contacted by Smiggle’s creative & product manager who was interested in my work who then passed on my details to the marketing department and that’s when the Smiggle collaboration began. Our first project together was shopping for Smiggle products and writing about them on my blog – what an amazing opportunity. I then designed two backgrounds for the Smiggle website (Locker Stockers and Smiggle Your Desktop). The latest project has been creating some Smiggle skins.

What was the inspiration for the web background design?

For Locker Stockers I delved into my past and remembered when I was in high school and how messy my locker with paper, textbooks, pens tumbling out of my locker. I wanted to illustrate how messy lockers can get and that you should really buy a locker stocker to make life easier for yourself.

For Smiggle Your Desktop – my inspiration came from all the beautiful Smiggle products. I wanted to illustrate them on a desk as a collage. I then coloured the desks and people in a colour crew theme.

What is your favourite Smiggle product and why?

I have a collection of the mini fountain pens that I use to draw my illustrations, they’re small enough to fit in my bag so I can doodle on the go. A lot of people ask what I use to draw and they’re often surprised it’s a small affordable pen. I’m also a big fan of the Smiggle tins that keep my desk tidy with all the pens, felt tips, crayons I have. The dog money boxes are super cute and so are the animal bookends that keep all my magazines neatly aligned. I’m basically a big Smiggle fanatic so I adore everything…the new bubble product range is very nice too!

Lastly, what do you think about the latest design a skin comp?

The Smiggle Skin Comp is brilliant! Whoever wins will be very lucky as their design will be printed and sold in Smiggle stores. It will be a nice slice of Smiggle fame. So get drawing and good luck!

So show us what you’ve got in our latest ‘design a skin’ competition http://colourcrew.smiggle.com.au:8080/competitionHome As Chrissy said there are awesome prizes to be won 🙂
